Yesterday at work we had our annual Professional Staff Association Day. Our planned day at the creek was rained out, so we were stuck indoors to visit and get to know our co-workers. And yes, it was as thrilling as it sounds. One of my co-workers asked me, "So, what do you do besides run?"
I was stumped. I began racking my brain for an intelligent answer. I felt myself beginning to get splotchy. Surely I do something of interest besides running. Obviously, I work, but he already knew that. I enjoy reading during my lunch break. I play Candy Crush now and then. I always DVR "Judge Judy". None of those seemed like pastimes worth sharing.
Finally I told him that I pretty much just run. During the semester, I teach on Monday nights so that's my off day. My boyfriend, Nate, and I organize a speedwork group on Tuesdays. We have group run night at The Run Around on Wednesdays. I run by myself on Thursdays and most Fridays after work. And then Saturday and Sunday I run longer distances which takes up a big chunk of the day.
So basically, I run. Sometimes I travel, but that generally ends up being running-related as well. We traveled to Boston in April so Nate and I could run the marathon. Last weekend we traveled to Minneapolis for a marathon (which was rained out), and this weekend we're traveling to Arkansas so Nate can run a 50K at War Eagle. Even trips that are planned for some other purpose often end up including a race. For example, I found a fantastic half-marathon in Fort Worth on Thanksgiving Day to run when I go down for family festivities!
Running may have taken over my life, but let's be honest, there are much worse things I could be doing. Addictive personalities run in my family, after all! And now almost all my closest friends are runners, so they don't even think I'm crazy. They appreciate the fact that one of the three bedrooms in our house is a "running room". Who needs an office, anyway?!? Between Nate and I, a closet would not accommodate our running shoes, attire, GPS watches, foam rollers, medals and trophies. Plus, I think the chalkboard "running wall" where we keep track of our PRs and upcoming races is one of the best features of the house.
Next time someone asks me what I do besides run, I'll proudly tell them, "That's about it!" Ooh, but now maybe I can add that I write a running blog : )
